St. Mary’s of Michigan - FlightCare Partners with Med-Trans for Air Medical Services

A new FlightCare helicopter is now flying the skies over the NE Michigan region to transport critically ill or injured patients to St. Mary’s of Michigan.

St. Mary’s has partnered with Med-Trans Corporation to grow their air ambulance program. With this new partnership, Med-Trans is providing a new helicopter and assuming business operations.

"It's a joy to fly," said David Jankowiak, lead pilot, of the Eurocopter EC 135 P2+.

The helicopter — St. Mary's first new aircraft in its 26-year flight history — was ready for use as of 7 a.m. Nov. 26.  St. Mary's welcomed it into service at the hangar at 800 S. Washington with a blessing.

Hospital Chaplain James Carlson prayed for safe journeys for the crew and patients on the aircraft and sprinkled holy water on it.

"This is a win-win for our region and the FlightCare program. Our patients and healthcare partners will continue to see the same flight teams they have come to depend on over the years for clinical excellence, operating under the same protocols and medical direction," said Mary Jo Stephen, FlightCare Program Director.

"This is an exciting time. Our newly developed relationship with Med-Trans assures ongoing success in providing critical air medical care to the residents in our service area," stated Stephen.

The Eurocopter has composite blades, a closed tail rotor, a glass cockpit and a state-of-the-art navigation system. Jankowiak said it's among the best helicopters out there. It handles better than the previous helicopter in heavy winds and turbulent weather, he said.

St. Mary's FlightCare crew members trained on the new helicopter for two weeks at MBS International Airport, getting used to its interior and adding supplies, said MaryJo Stephen, St. Mary's Flight Crew director.

"This is an exciting time. Our newly developed relationship with Med-Trans assures ongoing success in providing critical air medical care to the residents in our service area," stated Stephen.

Reid Vogel, Director of Marketing for Med-Trans Corporation stated, “FlightCare has done an outstanding job caring for and providing critical care to patients throughout the region. FlightCare is an indispensable service that will continue to benefit the region when time is of the essence.”

Med-Trans, a leading air medical operator based out of Dallas, TX was selected as the new aviation partner of St. Mary’s of Michigan FlightCare.  Three crewmembers — a pilot, registered nurse and paramedic —fly on all calls.  "We're really excited," Stephen said.

St. Mary's FlightCare has flown nearly 11,000 patients throughout mid- and Northern Michigan and the Thumb.
