At Med-Trans, we believe that safety is much more than a buzzword or just a regulatory compliance standard. We are absolutely committed to safety as a core value and proud to be a leader in the industry with proven, pro-active accident/incident prevention principles.
We apply these principles to all areas of our air ambulance service operations including personnel, equipment, management and program relationships. No priority will supersede our commitment to our flight crews, patients or customers to provide the safest, most reliable Emergency Air Medical Services available.
Safety Management System
Med-Trans’ Safety Management System applies a systematic approach that not only addresses regulatory compliance requirements, but also provides guidance and support to facilitate the pursuit of safety excellence. The foundational elements of Med-Trans’ SMS are based on the three E’s of Safety: Education, Engineering and Enforcement.
Industry-Leading Pilot Training
Our world-class flight training program is designed to initially identify and place the best air ambulance pilots available, train on state-of-the-art equipment, provide the best level of situational awareness and hone skills specific to our air medical transport mission. Our pilots train in normal and non-normal (emergency) procedures every 120 days. One of those multi-day training sessions are conducted in full motion Level 4 simulators to provide the opportunity for our pilots to experience emergencies that cannot be safely replicated in the aircraft. Our training is further enhanced by employing highly experienced Med-Trans Instructor Pilots to ensure standardization and excellence. Additionally, we conduct in-person Crew Resource Management (CRM) and Air Medical Resource Management (AMRM), Operations and Safety, Human Factors, Emergency procedures, Fatigue Risk Management and Threat and Error Management training for all of our employees. Our flight crew training program far exceeds Federal Aviation Administration and CAMTS requirements.
State-Of-The-Art Technology for Enhanced Safety and Performance
- Night Vision Goggles – enable aircraft and crews to provide a significant increase in the level of risk mitigation for night flights over unfamiliar terrain.
- XM Satellite Weather – provides pilots with real-time weather updates in the cockpit.
- Satellite Flight Tracking – allows for continuous near real-time monitoring for all aircraft from our regional communication centers.
- Helicopter Terrain Avoidance Warning Systems (HTAWS) – shows approaching obstacles, so pilots can steer clear well in advance.
- GPS – an all-in-one navigation and communication unit that makes navigation calculations quickly, making it easier for pilots to read and interpret critical information.
- Integrated Satellite Telephone Technology – ensures communications beyond line-of-sight radio coverage areas.
